Ki-Be vs. East Valley
The Bears will be facing a tough Red Devil team on thursday. State veterans Josh Thompson and Kyle Hopkins will lead East Valley, which will have at least 10 juniors or seniors in their lineup. Possible Matchups: 103 - Ryan Corke vs. Kevin West 112 - Chris Stade vs. B.J.Wilson 119 - Sergio Avila vs. Chris Buckalew 125 - Barry Leavitt vs. Michael Saurez 130 - Richard Pourier vs. John Wilson 135 - Andrew Wight vs. John Coleman 140 - Josh Corke vs. Josh Thompson 145 - Ramon DelAngel vs. Kyle Hopkins 152 - Jesse DeLaPena vs. Cody Ransier 160 - Mark McCullough vs. Matt Flowers 171 - Kyle Nickerson vs. Jamie Sehorn 189 - Josh Corriel vs. Ryan Evers 215 - Eliseo Llerenas vs. Luis Escamilla or Adrian Lepe 275 - Kevin Hunter vs. Jay Bandle or James Brown Key matchups will be Corke vs. West, Wight vs. Coleman, DelAngel vs. Hopkins, McCullough vs. Flowers, Llerenas vs. Escamilla or Lepe and Hunter vs Bandle or Brown. If the Bears can win 5 of these 6 then they will have a good shot at picking up their first dual win of the season. Sergio is coming off of a 1st place finish at the Connell Invite and should take care of business against Buckalew. The match of the night will probably be Corke against Thompson. Josh Thompson placed 4th at state last year and is a strong candidate for a state title this year. Jesse DeLaPena is coming off of a 3rd place finish at the Connell Invite and the Bears will need a big win from him on thursday. Other Notable Items: Tourney Champions - E.V. Josh Thompson, Ryan Evers (Eisenhower TD Tourney. KB - Sergio Avila (Connell Invite) Corriel was 1-2 versus Sehorn last year. Nickerson was 1-0 versus Flowers last year. Hunter was 0-1 versus Brown last year. Josh Corke was 0-1 versus Thompson last year. The Bears have defeated East Valley two straight and are 2-4 lifetime againts the Red Devils. The Bears have not started 0-3 since 1987.
Ki-Be Invite Preview Ramon DelAngel and Sergio Avila will try and defend their Ki-Be Invite titles, while Jesse DeLaPena and Josh Corke try to better their positions by one. They both placed 2nd a year ago. The Bears have won their tournament the past two years, but will have to do some work to keep the trophy at Ki-Be this year. Sergio (4-0) has not lost a match at the Ki-Be Invite. He won the 101 title as a freshman and won the 103 title last year. Ramon DelAngel is 5-1 at the Ki-Be Invite the past two years, while Jesse DeLaPena's invite record is 4-2 with two second place finishes. The Bears will need strong showings from all the wrestlers to maintain their hold on the Ki-Be Invite Title.
