The Bears defeated the Wildcats for the 6th time in 9 meetings. After the opening ceremonies in which the senior wrestlers, managers and their parents were honored, Senior Joseph DelAngel started things off with a pin in his JV match. Senior La Sourivongsa came out at full speed and took care of his JV opponent with a first round pin.
Ryan Phipps got the varsity going as he dismantled Guillermo Rodriguez for a pin in just 1:12. Senior Justin Rolland received a forfeit to make the score 12-0 Bears. Senior Justin Mack wrestled tough against Teo Rios but succumbed to a pin in the second round. Seniors Frankie Ramirez and Ross McDorman made quick work of thier Wildcat opponents with 1st round pins to put the Bears up 24-6.
At 103, Justin Hunt recorded the first takedown on Gutierrez and nearly turned him to his back. Gutierrez started on top for the second round, stuck the leg in and eventually turned Justin for the pin. Travis Haug took on a fired up JJ Garza at 112. This was a quick moving match and Travis gave it a good effort before Garza recorded the pin. Bears 24, Wildcats 18.
Ryan Corke got things back on track for the Bears as he used his killer leg ride and a guillotine to finish off Castenada. Kyle Hagins fought a galiant fight against Romero at 125 before being tech'd. Jerry Haug did not back down from Joel Flores in the 130 match, but Flores caught him in the second round for the pin. Ryan Burns gave it his best against Jess Leon before being tech'd. Wildcats 34, Bears 30.
Junior Gonzalez dominated Villanueva and was flippin flapjacks as he pancaked him for the pin. Junior is now 27-0 on the year. At 145, Tony Chapin muscled Cesar Godinez for a 3rd round pin. Tony has a lot of fans out their as nearly everyone is picking him for their CWAC challenge team. Larry Metcalf wrestled the only match all night that went the distance. Larry jumped out to and early 9-3 lead before getting caught in a head and arm that made the score 9-7. Larry regained control, turned Cortez, then raised his arms in victory with a 12-7 win.
Next up for the Bears is the Zillah All-Comers meet and then the real season will begin at Kiona-Benton next Friday.
