Brandon Ashley - Brandon trailed Conrad Garza for nearly the entire finals match and was behind 7-4 with just 8 seconds left after running Garza out of bounds. That is when Ashley decided to throw his patented head and arm. Conrad must have known it was coming, but it was textbook perfect and it could not be stopped. After some descussion by the referees, Brandon was awarded a takedown and 2 backpoints for an 8-7 win. Possibly a prelude to the state finals.
Tony Chapin - Dominated from the beginning against Lukas Wolff. Wolff was never able to get his legride going against Tony and was even put on his back when attempting it on one occasion. Tony looked very much in control and is probably wrestling better now than at anytime in his highschool career. Some State Tournament hardware is well within Tony's reach.
Junior Gonzalez - Another close match with Orozco was the way the finals turned out. A late third round takedown won it for Junior, 3-1. He is now 31-1 on the year and 78-2 over the last two years. If everything goes well and Junior wrestles like he can, we should be watching him in the finals this coming Satruday.
Ryan Phipps - After losing to Tate Collins of Chelan in the first round and losing to Jesus Soto of Grandview last week and also during the regular season, Ryan avenged both loses. First he recorded a 0:59 pin against Soto in the consolation quarters to advance to state. Next he took apart Tate Collins in the consolation finals 12-0 with a barrage of takedowns and back-points. Phipps could well be on his way to earning some state hardware.
Daniel Gonzalez - Daniel's march through the post-season continues. If his performance at district and regionals is any indication, it is possible that Daniel will make the podium at state. His best performance of the day was a 3-2 win over James Bush of Ephrata, 8th at state last season.
Troy Cunningham - Troy evened the score with Matt Garza with a 2-1 win in the consolation quarters. Matt won the first two meetings while Troy won the last two. Troy will be the 11th freshman in Ki-Be history to make it to state. The podium is his next stop.
Jeff Slape and Zac Clegg each went 0-2, but they did a great job just to get this far. Slape will graduate this year, but Clegg should be back at it next season.
