Bears Wrestler of the Week
2004-2005

Ryan Phipps - 160 - Senior
January 24th - January 30th
Ryan missed a lot of mat time early in the season, but he has come on late to make another run at a state birth. Ryan is 10-6 on the year with all 10 wins coming via the pin. Ryan has won 58 career matches, 37 by pin, and he could become only the 12th wrestler in Ki-Be History to make it to regionals all 4 years. He finished off his highschool dual meet action by recording pins against Connell and Othello.

Troy Cunningham - 103 - Freshman
January 17th - January 23rd
Troy is currently 22-5 on the year and has 1 tournament championship under his belt. Troy wrestled an impressive dual against state veteran Miguel Zuniga of Connell and came out a 10-6 winner. Troy showed better conditioning as he hit Zuniga with a barrage of double leg takedowns late in the match. Troy should contend for some post-season hardware this year.

Junior Gonzalez - 145 - Senior
January 10th - January 16th
Junior won both of his league dual matches by pin during the week and then suffered his first loss of the year at the Hoquiam Invite, taking second to Justin Eastman of Rochester. Eastman placed 3rd at state at 130 last season. In the past two seasons Junior is a combined 62-2, both losses coming to Rochester wrestlers. Despite the loss, Junior is primed and ready for another run at a state title in February.

Tommy Small - 189 - Senior
January 3rd - January 9th
Tommy had a great Grandview Invite tournament with 3 wins and 2 pins to place third. It was Tommy's first highschool wrestling medal and helped the team to a third place finish. His three wins gave him 5 wins for the season. Tommy has a lot of catching up to do against the CWAC wrestlers, but a performance like this will give him confidence for the remainder of the season.

Brandon Ashley - 112 - Senior
December 26th - January 2nd
Brandon Ashley won his first career Royal Christmas Tourney title by recording 3 pins and tech falling Robert Spackman of Riverside in the final (Spackman placed 5th at state at 103 last year). Brandon currently is 16-0, has a 17 match winning streak and 93 career wins. His 3rd pin at Royal pushed him past Ale DeLaPena into first place all-time on the Ki-Be pin list with 49. Can anyone stop Brandon this year?

Tony Chapin - 152 - Senior
December 12th - 25th
Tony went 6-0 in the last couple weeks with 4 pins. He won all 5 of his matches at the Best of the West tourney. Tony's current record is 9-3 and he should be a huge factor in the CWAC this year. Chapin has what it takes to make it to state this year, but he will have to wrestle at the top of his game, just as he has this past week.

Jose Prado - 215 - Senior
December 4th - 11th
Jose has already accumulated more team points this year than he did all of the previous two seasons. 3 of his 4 wins this year have been by pin. In the Naches dual, Jose turned the tide with a pin and led the Bears to victory after the Rangers had built a 24-7 lead. At the Connell invite, Jose grabbed his first career medal by taking fourth. The Bears really need Jose to step it up this year and so far he is doing just that.
