Connell Invite Results
Brandon Ashley and Junior Gonzalez each won their second consecutive Connell invite championship. In four years of wrestling in the invite, Ashley accumulated a 12-2 record with 6 pins and placed 2nd twice along with his championships. In four years, Gonzalez went 14-2 with 4 pins and also recorded 2 fourth place finishes to go with his championships.
Ashley dominated a good 112 field, specifically Travis Draper in the finals. Brandon recorded Td after Td and was constantly on the offensive. Draper didn't know what hit him.
Gonzalez had a bit tougher time with Adam Orozco as he had to take it into 2-OT for the title. In the second OT Orozco took down, which is usually a good idea. But Gonzalez showed his toughness and held on to Orozco just long enough for the win.
Jose Prado continued a great week with a 4th place finish and 2 pins. On Thursday, Prado turned the tide in the Naches dual and on Saturday he picked up his first highschool wrestling medal. Prado could really give the Bears a boost at the heavier weights if he can continue to wrestle like this.
Troy Cunningham lost a close semifinal match 12-9 to the eventual champ, Tyler Gatemen of Vashon. In the quarterfinals he squeeked out a 4-2 win over Jared Reyes of Quincy. In the third place match he wated little with Derek Campbell of Naches with a 45 second pin.
At 171, Johnny Rivera recorded 2 pins and wrestled very well in taking 6th. Against Josh Vantrease of Naches, who had pinned Rivera just two days prior, he lost a close 8-5 battle. Jerry Haug put on a spurt in the second round of his 3rd place match to make the score 6-7 in his match with state vet Tyler Justus. He eventually lost 17-9, but he showed what he is capable of. Burns and Chapin ran into some tough competition on their way to 6th place finishes.
