Ki-Be Post-Season Preview
This has been one of the most impressive teams that Coach Hill and Cunningham have turned out over the years. All of the kids on this team have improved greatly over the course of the year and all look very comfortable on the mat and know what they are doing. Here are some things to look for this post-season.
The top wrestlers to watch will be Matt McCallum, David Gonzalez and Sheridan McDonald. McCallum has a legitmate shot at a state title this year, though it will take a lot of work to finish it off. There are a number of good wrestlers at 119 in the SCAC and some pretty good ones will be waiting for him at State as well. Gonzalez has shown tremendous development this year and is peaking at the right time. He could be a surprise to many wrestlers in the post-season. He could finish high in the medal ranks at state, though first he must take care of business and get there. McDonald is going for her 3rd straight title and is on pace to become the first 4X girls champ. She must not overlook her opponents on the way there however. She is unbeaten in post-season competition and has lost only 1 time in her career to a girl.
The next group of guys to watch will be Travis Roos, Robert Palencia, Kelvin Schuman, Chris Howell, Clay Wilcox, Adam Johnson and Corey Brumbaugh. Travis and Chris had experienced the Tacoma Dome and the excitement that it brings. Both will find the going tougher this year in the effort to get back to state. The way they have been wrestling lately suggests that they are up to the task. Palencia, Schuman and Wilcox have all improved tremendously in the past month and look ready to turn some heads in the post-season. They could surprise many an unsuspecting opponent. Johnson has the potential to make things happen, but he must bring his A-Game. Brumbaugh has a bright career ahead of him and this year could bring him a state trip, but he has much work to do.
Newcomer Garrett Whitney, a transfer from Connell, will make the team even tougher this post-season. Garrett placed 6th at State at 171 last year and if he can quickly get in shape, he should be a force again this year for the Bears.
The others who will get their shot in the post-season and get valuable experience will be Edvin Wilson, Joel Campbell, John Kortz, Seth Materazzo, Donald Baze, Josue Lucatero, Kale Setzer, Dakota Renz and Senior, Joseph Mettling.
For the remaining girls, Amy Campbell and Samantha Wright, the road could lead to the Dome. Both have wrestled great this year and both have the potential to not only get to the Dome, but to place.
The Bears as a team will be competitive and should place in the top half of the teams at district and regionals and a top 10 at state is possible if everyone does their part.
Congratulations to Coach Hill and Coach Cunningham for a job well done!
