CWAC Regional Review
103 - This weightclass continues to be unpredictable. Last weekend it was Ashley, Cerna, DeLeon and Thompson in the South district. They once again held down the top 4 spots this week, but Thompson moved to #1 while the others moved down one spot: Thompson, Ashley, Cerna, DeLeon. For the North it was Ruff going. Nick Ruff placed 5th and is the alternate to state. Zach Aguirre gave the Quincy fans a scare as he was slammed by AJ Cummings (who was disqualified) in his 1st round consolation match and was carried off on a gurney. He later returned to the tournament as a spectator.
112 - No surprises in this weightclass. Edgar Mendez and Lorenzo Longoria met in the finals with the Quincy wrestler pulling out a low scoring, 3-0 win. Ricky Brown wrestled tough in all of his matches and lost a couple close matches to Kameron Hopkins. Jason Escobedo defeated Conrad Garza for the alternate spot.
119 - State champ Dago Velasquez wrestled one match in the tournament, defeating Abelino Ramirez in the 1st round. Jose Mendez forfeited to him in the semi's. Tony Cantu won the title on an injury default. Ryan Corke pulled off the biggest upset here, as he defeated the North's #1, Chris Smith of Ephrata, in 2OT's. Corke was able to hold Chris Smith down for the win. Corke placed 6th, Smith went 0-2. Abelino was the only North wrestler to make it through to state.
125 - Richie Hearst is hitting on all cylinders at the right time. Hearst defeated two very good wrestlers on his way to the title. He first defeated Othello's Keith Smith before beating Angel Gonzales at his own game. Angel is one of the best takedown artists in the CWAC, but Hearst managed a takedown to tie the score at 4 with just 10 seconds to go in regulation. He then recorded a takedown in OT for the title. That is the kind of performance that could take him deep into the championship round at Mat Classic.
130 - JD Gomez showed that he will be a threat at Mat Classic with his 11-2 domination of Jeff Smith in their final. Stace Webley came into regionals as the alternate, but he did not wrestle like an alternate. Webley narrowly missed a state trip, placing 5th. Ernest Guzman couldn't make it an all Othello final again, but did manage a third place finish.
135 - Here is another weightclass that is hard to figure out. Both #1's were defeated by #2's. While Junior Gonzalez was dominating Garrett Dart with 4 takedowns and an 8-3 semi win, Tommie Lindquist was picking Rigo Pruneda apart 12-6. Dart then pinned Pruneda in the 3rd place match. Lindquist built a 6-3 lead on Gonzalez with TD's and held on for a 6-5 win. Lindquist now holds a 2-1 advantage on Gonzalez this year.
140 - Scott Ouradnik got his revenge on Justin Corke with a pin in the finals. Corke almost did not make the finals as he had a barn burner in the semi's. Justin seemed in control of the semi with Brandon Sims, but Sims gained back points to get back into the match. Brandon was able to tie the score and send the match into OT. In the 2nd OT, Corke was able to escape with 17 seconds to go for the win.
145 - The match between Ives and Corke finally happened. Josh took an early 6-3 lead on takedowns. Ives came back at the end of the first round with a takedown to close the gap to 6-5. It looked like Ives was going to give the state champ a run for his money, but Corke road tough in the second and turned Ives for the pin. Steven Smith of Cascade turned in an impressive tournament with a pin of Kyle Prescott of Naches, for third.
152 - In the early going of this final, it did not look like Massey was as untouchable as thought. Alex Torres was giving Massey fits in the first round, even gaining the lead at one point. Massey took control in the next two rounds and went on to a 12-5 win. Freshman Jacob Sypher will be one to watch as he held off Scott Caudill of Cashmere 2-1 for third place.
160 - Brandon Wagner is one of the best wrestlers in the CWAC. Unfortunately he is in the same weightclass as Juventino. Wagner gives his all against Orozco, but hasn't been able to sovle Juventino yet. The outcome was another tech fall by Orozco. Dean Agee had a great tournament, pinning North #1, Zach Harris in the trip to state match. Agee's two losses were to Tony Lee of Connell who took third.
171 - Josh Corriell seemed to be sleepwalking or bored as he beat Joe Rosenkranz for the 4th time this year. These two have met each other at least 6 times in the past two years, with Josh winning all of them. While Corriell could be looking at a finals appearance at state, Rosenkranz should also do well at state this year. Kelly Davis of Ehprata fought back for a third place finish after a 7-3 setback to Rosenkranz in the semi's. Teo Rios was a surprise, placing 4th and beating two fine wrestlers in Tyrel Sandelin and Ben Niccum.
189 - Clint Webley looks very good. After his 11-5 win over Andy Deleon, Clint looks ready to take on the wrestlers at state. Justin Hoefner of Cashmere put on a show for the Cashmere fans taking third with a pin over Mick Gause of East Valley. #2 North, Adam Burkhart of Chelan lost an OT match to #2 South, Gause in the consolation semi's and placed 6th.
215 - Cesar Williams continues to deserve the high rankings he has had all year. He took the CWAC championship with a pin of Ian Anderson of Chelan. In the semifinal, Anderson stunned #1 South wrestler, Curt Davis of Othello, winning 9-4. Davis and Chris Lee of Connell tied one on in the consolation finals, with Davis winning on a late takedown, 8-6.
275 - The mammoth battles continue. This time it was Healy coming out on top 7-4 over Jake Byl. Both Healy and Byle defeated the dynamic duo from Ki-Be in the Semi's. Healy took care of McDorman as Byl defeated Hunter. Clinton Meacham wrestled tough and defeated McDorman in a close trip to state match. Meacham gets my sportsmanship award for this tournament. McDorman defeated Davis 5-1 in the 5th place match.
Othello will take 9 wrestlers to state, including 2 champions. Othello won again because nobody can match their number of good wrestlers. Connell will also be taking 9 wrestlers, 1 champion. Quincy may be in the best shape for state as they will be taking 5 champions among their 6 wrestlers. The Kiona-Benton Bears will be taking 2 champions and 3 runner-ups among their 6 qualifiers. The rest of the teams shape up like this (champions in parenthesis): Ephrata 4 (2); Chelan 4 (1); Cashmere 4; Omak 4; East Valley 3 (1); Naches 3; Cascade 2; Toppenish 2
